"Zuting Shiyuan" was compiled by Mu'an Shanqing of the Northern Song dynasty. It is a reference work of Chan Buddhist vocabulary and allusions, combining the characteristics of a character dictionary, classified encyclopedia, and compendium of Chan knowledge. The book extensively explains monastic titles, Chan expressions, and sectarian allusions, and later readers often relied on it when reading recorded sayings, gong'an cases, and Chan monastic literature. This item is a Gozan edition, printed in early Muromachi-period Japan, and also provides insight into the transmission of East Asian Chan texts and the Japanese Gozan printing tradition.
