The Sutra of the Original Vows and Merits of the Medicine Master Lapis Lazuli Light Tathagata is included in Volume 14 of the Taishō Canon, numbered T0450, translated by the Tripiṭaka Master Xuanzang of the Tang dynasty. In the sutra, Mañjuśrī Bodhisattva makes the request, and the Buddha expounds the twelve great vows made by the Medicine Master Lapis Lazuli Light Tathagata of the Eastern Pure Lapis Lazuli World while on the causal ground, as well as the merits of practices such as hearing the name, making offerings, reciting and chanting, observing precepts, lighting lamps, and making banners. Medicine Buddha devotion emphasizes eliminating calamities and prolonging life, physical and mental peace and stability, sufficiency of livelihood, freedom from various misfortunes, and through the power of vows rescuing and protecting sentient beings toward enlightenment. The title markings “Treasure of the Kangxi Emperor’s Imperial Brush” and “Manuscript copy from the fifty-third year of the Kangxi reign of the Qing dynasty” indicate that this is not only a Buddhist manuscript scripture, but is also connected with Qing dynasty court calligraphy, imperial seals, and the practice of Medicine Buddha devotion.
