The Great Compassion Dharani, commonly known as the “Great Compassion Mantra,” is an Avalokitesvara dharani with extremely wide circulation in Chinese Buddhism, often associated with Thousand-Hand Thousand-Eye Avalokitesvara, salvation and protection, repentance rituals, and daily recitation practice. Materials such as “Manifestation Images of the Great Compassion Dharani” focus on transforming the merits of the mantra, manifestations of Avalokitesvara, or responses to cultivation practice into a visual system for viewing, facilitating worship and visualization while also preserving the appearance of Buddhist woodblock prints and visual narrative traditions. This edition may be used for research on Avalokitesvara faith, dharani practice, and the dissemination of Buddhist imagery in the late imperial period.
